Pliny The Elder – Double India Pale Ale – Russian River Brewing Company
If you like IPA’s you are going to have a great time trying this one – but good luck finding it. Pliny The Elder from Russian River Brewing Company is a legendary beer ranking high on many a beer list but extremely hard to find. I recently have had the privilege of enjoying a bottle and… what can I say, it’s a great beer. I poured a little fast and got a huge head which is something I will like to remember next go around. Here is how it went!
Appearance – Thick head on mine, probably avoidable. Golden amber brew with tiny bubbles.
Smell – Pine, somewhat floral. Some citrus too. Outdoorsy.
Taste – It’s best fresh and has a date on the bottle so you know what you are getting into. I found a great balance of hops and citrus… The outdoorsy part combined with a grapefruity bite. Pretty good!
Mouthfeel – at 8% abv its pretty smooth – almost thirst quenching.
Overall – Aside from wishing it was more available, this is a great great great beer. If you find it, DRINK IT!
Check out their website, there is a pretty good story as to why the name came about.
